What to Expect at Your First Massage Appointment
By Maria Scalone , State Licensed and Board-Certified Massage Therapist
Planning your first massage appointment? Here’s what you can expect to help you feel comfortable and prepared:
Before Your Appointment:
Please arrive 10–15 minutes early to complete a health history form. Be sure to bring a list of any medications you’re currently taking, including over-the-counter items like Tylenol or Ibuprofen, as they may affect how your massage is performed.
If you need to use the restroom, we recommend doing so before your service begins , lying on the table with a full bladder can be uncomfortable.
Consultation & Room Setup:
You’ll be escorted to the treatment room where your therapist will review your health history, treatment goals, potential contraindications, room temperature, and sound preferences.
The therapist will then leave the room so you can undress in private. You may keep your underwear on if preferred. Once on the table, cover yourself with the top sheet and blanket.
Your therapist will knock before reentering, and any last-minute adjustments (table warmer, lighting, etc.) can be made. You will be properly draped at all times, with only the area being worked on exposed.
During Your Massage:
Some clients enjoy conversation; others prefer quiet. Just let your therapist know your preference , we’re happy to accommodate either. Your therapist may check in with you during the massage or ask questions relevant to your treatment. All communication is kept confidential.
We encourage you to speak up at any time about pressure, temperature, or any discomfort. It’s much easier to adjust during the session than after it’s over.
After Your Massage:
Once the service is complete, your therapist will leave the room. You may use the provided hot towel to wipe off any excess oil, get dressed, and meet your therapist outside the room.
Your therapist may suggest at-home self-care or recommend you consult with a chiropractor or physician if they notice anything of concern during your session.
You may feel relaxed or sleepy afterward , feel free to spend a few minutes in our relaxation suite to readjust. Tea or water will be provided upon request. We strongly recommend drinking extra fluids post-massage to support detox and recovery.
Mild soreness may occur for a day or two depending on the type of massage you received.
Payment & Rebooking:
Payment is due at the end of your service. Gratuity is accepted and appreciated , 15% is a typical guideline if you’re unsure. The front desk will offer the option to rebook, and appointments can always be changed if needed. We kindly ask for at least 2 hours’ notice for any cancellations or reschedules.
